Actually increased advance will increase power, and lessen consumption. All
within limits, of course. But it will require the use of higher octane to
reduce/eliminate pinging/knock. Also increased advance runs the engine
cooler. When racing in the old days, with points/distrubutor, overheating
was common due to inadequate cooling. A little bump in the advance curve,
different spring in the distributor, would often cure the overheating
problem.
