[Shotimes] Tire Width

Amen.

I have become a believer in getting a proper rim width to get a tire to work
as designed. Going to wider/shorter tires on a less-than-optimal rim is a
waste.

Learned this on the 911 when 225/50/16 tires worked better on the 16x8"
rims. My current car came with 215/45/17 tires on a 17x7" rim. I went to a
17x7.5" rim with a set of summer 215/45/17 tires, and steering response, as
well as overall handling, feel better.

OTOH, I went to 225/55/16 ES100s on slicers on my former '94. Absolute
cornering was better on the track, but transient response did not feel as
good as the 215/60/16 winter tires that I ran on a 2nd set of slicers for
the winter.

As has been mentioned, it really matters what your goal is on tires.
I have run everywehre in the range of a 215/60/16 to a 245/40/17. The
rim width is important becasue the sidewalls are really designed to
sit vertically, and not rolled in some amount. By rolling in the
sidewalls a bit you decrease the effectivenss of them proportional to
the amount they are rolled in
