You have the right idea, but I seriously doubt there is much structural
protection in that 1 layer of sheet metal in the fender, there is no bracing
or reinforcment in that area, just the sheet metal. I never gave it a
second thought, I know of at least 5 Gen II's (all of which have been sold
off to different new owners in at least 4 different states) with this same
alteration, fortunately there are no accidents to see if in fact anything
would or could have been affected by it.
I really wish I could find those pictures.
