Ian, You are correct.  If a CID sensor goes bad, the engine will stumble
and lose power, but not necessarily stall.  This is definitely from
personal experience.  The issue at the time was heat sensitive.  The only
good thing I can say about this is that the CEL came on and the computer
did capture the 214 code IIRC.
