Both 3.0 and 3.8 OHV engines are a Serpentine belt setup w/ an automatic
tensioner. I have worked on a 3.8 and it lost the tensioner right around 140k.
It was a fairly easy replacement when the coil and bracket removed. It is only
held in w/ one bolt (on a 1992) and then a pin keeps it from rocking back and
forth.
Did the driver hear a loud noise? When the tensioner failed it sounded like gun
shot ;) The belt failing sounds like a large rubberband, not nearly as noisy as
the tensioner going.
One other POSSIBLE problem I've see with a few SLOs that have had poor / no
cooling system maintnance is the water pump locking up on the shaft and causing
the belt to "melt" That STINKS!!
