>From my Big Book of Dogs:
The American Kennel Club (AKC), largest in the US, recognizes the breed as
"American Staffordshire Terrier".
The United Kennel Club (UKC), 2nd largest in the US, recognizes the breed as
"Amercian Pit Bull Terrier".
They were originally bred for fighting (not hunting), and that is where the
"pit" name comes from, as in "fighting pit".
They are recognized as separate breeds because the Staffordshire is
supposedly the kindler, gentler "family pet", and the Pit Bull is the
agressive "fighting dog".
The "Bull Terrier" is a sort of distant relative. The Bull Terrier is a
very gentle, fun-loving, very unique-looking (read strange) dog. Remember
the Bud Light 'spokes'-dog, Spuds McKenzie? He was/is a Bull Terrier.
