Where is the play, can you tell? Is there still slop at the pinch bolt
joint? If so, a new rack won't cure that, I don't believe. You can try and
shim it, I think George F. has done this.
If play is not evident here, then I guess it could be the rack.

Subject: [Shotimes] Loose Steering Rack
Since I bought my 92 MTX back in December, I've been annoyed by a large
amount of play in the steering wheel which makes it hard to track straight
on the highway and exacerbates torque steer around town. It feels like the
problem is at the coupIing between the rack and the column because I can
feel when the all the slack is taken up and the rack starts to provide
resistance. I read the article about tightening the pinch bolt where the
rack attaches to the column and tried to tighten the bolt but it was already
cinched down. Even after backing off the bolt and retightening it, the play
was still there.
Is there a way to somehow take up the slack in the coupling or am I loking
at replacing the rack. If the latter is my only option, do I need to
replace it with a SHO-specific rack or will a reman SLO rack (Ford part #
F3DZ3504AX) do? Thanks,
Pete
