And, it is best to put a flat washer between the two nuts to keep them from
galling against each other as you tighten and loosen them.

This is the traditional method for dealing with studs, but you normally
can't use a socket wrench.  For removing studs you want to apply torque to
the nut that is closest to the manifold, meaning you probably have to use a
wrench and not a socket.  Heat will help, as will lots of penetrating oil.
Sometimes you have to turn the stud back and forth, a little bit at a time,
each time maybe turning it further out.
