As long as the brush sliprings look fine there is seldom a failure in the
rotor. (we are talking AC current here, guys.  There is no armature and
field, just the rotor and stator) The vast majority of alternator failures
are caused by either worn out brushes, diode bridge failure or a bad voltage
regulator module

hmmm...good point. Does anyone know?

Do armatures go bad? I think my 93 alt was dying but
it may have just been a bad battery clamp connection..
