The LS6 is a pretty well built motor IMHO.  Very flat torque curve, has
close to the same RPM range as a lot of current OHC motors, and is screwed
together pretty well with decent materials.  It's also about 30-50 lbs
lighter than a SHO V6 (physically probably smaller to) depending on
application, etc

Nothing in the GM camp does anything for me (as nothing does in the current
Ford camp) although I'd give the C5/C6 vette and CTS-V platform and
LS1/2/6/7 series engines a couple of thumbs up.
