I passed this hint along after replacing the alternator in my ATX. Here it is again. When I rotated the idler pulley to get the belt off, I used a long breaker bar which happened to have a hole in the end of the handle. After getting the belt off, I wired the breaker bar to the engine lift bracket with a clothes hanger and left it that way til the new alternator was installed and the belt back on. If you try to release tension on the pulley, it rotates back much further than when the belt is on, and there's not a lot of room to let it do that. I'm guessing this would work just as well in a MTX. If your breaker bar doesn't have a hole in the handle, perhaps you could wire it to something lower so the hanger won't slip off the handle. I think I had considered wiring it to the battery tray before noticing the hole in the end.

Thanks you guys. I considered all of your "hints". However, you all are
making things very difficult. I just used a plasma cutter and went through
the hood, cut out the battery and tray, and then just zapped the belt and
bolt heads.
And you guys wanted to open doors, pull hood latches, or break glass? Maybe
you should all reconsider your DIY abilities.
