Becareful if you o have rivets.  I took the time to drill them out because Ian stripped the threads on his rack when he broke the rivets.

   You don't have to pull the rack.  Take the outers off, then remove the dust boot (two clamps).  Pull it off the rod and you will see a hex head with the rod coming out the center.  There are two (actually three, but it's close enough) different size hex heads out there, but Autozone loans out a tool that fits them all.  I own one, a direct result of owning several 89's. :)  The tool is a really deep 1/2" drive socket.
   The only gotcha is that there is either a rivet or a hex screw in one of the flats of the rods.  If it's a hex, remove it before using the tool.  If it's a rivet, just put the tool on and twist.  The new ones usually come with hex screws these days, but some are still rivets.
