Both of my '89s have been pre-January '89 (actually, both are November '88 build dates) and as such have the old-style copper and brass heater cores. After Jan '89 they got aluminum. My old non-SHO '89 had the aluminum. I can say that the copper/brass cores hold up nicely (130k before replcing on one, 180k on the other), while the aluminum succumbed to bad electrolytic corrosion quickly. Pinholes in the cooling fins seemed to be the most common for me. Of course, grounding the core worked wonders for durability. It's probably a paranoid thing, but I like to ground any heater core I do, no matter the metals used.
