[Shotimes] Ford to cut 25,000-30,000 jobs

An article in the Detroit News the other day said that both Ford & GM were
considering dropping minivans, as it had a chart of minivan sales this past
year, and bother were at the bottom.
I dunno, I have friends who really liked their Windstars, as well as their
current Freestar. They are nice, but others in the market seem to be better.
The land that the Wixom plant sits on would make Ford more $$$ in a sale
than many years of profit that they could make on cars built there. It used
to be in the boonies, now it's in a growing area.
There are two issues they all have. They have way too much capacity, as the
best the Big 3 can hope for is to not lose more market share. Once they
readjust production capacity, they still have to become more efficient and
built their vehicles more cheaply.

One of the reason I heard cited this morning for the decreased market share
was the pitiful excuse of a minivan that the Freestar is. The Windstar was
behind the curve the day it came out, and this poor thing was way behind
when it arrived. Maybe they have figured out that fewer good products
might be a good idea. Sad about Wixom(some great stuff was built there)
and, of course, Atlanta. But time to get with the program.

And, of course, Gettelfinger is being his usual a-hole socialist self. The
bottom line is that Ford wants the remaining jobs to be solid and
productive. The UAW just wants mass numbers to keep paying dues.
US car mfrs MUST deal with lower market share. Too many players in the
market. The also must increase productivity.
The 2007 UAW negotiations should be interesting the UAW Jobs bank has to be
abolished. I suspect that the Big 3 will take strikes rather than capitulate
to these whacky schemes.
