Mark,

Actually, exhaust system rust out has little to do with salt on the 
roads, and everything to do with the length of your average trip.  When 
I was doing on the road sales covering 3 states, I almost never needed 
exhaust work.

Then I started working in town with an average daily "commute" of less 
than a mile. Short trips don't ever get the exhaust hot enough to 
evaporate the moisture that any engine will create and any exhaust 
system will collect.  Those acidic fluids eat the system from the inside 
out.  That is why tailpipes always rust first, they stay the coolest.

A true stainless system is pretty much immune to that condensation rust.

But yes, I do live in the heart of the rust belt.  We get ice, snow and 
lots of freeze thaw action.  It just isn't why my exhaust systems rust 
out in a couple years.
