[Shotimes] AC compressor durability

I have two compressors, one out of an 87 and one out of my 90. They both
look exactly the same so I assume they are. Anyway, I know the one out of
the 87 worked, but I have no idea if the 90 works. Is there someway to get a
preventative rebuild done? I'm balking at the > $300 the rebuilt ones cost
on many of the AC websites and would much rather pay someone to do a once
over on my compressors that aren't attached. Is that possible, or even worth
it?
