[Shotimes] (OT) friend seeks 4WD under $10K

A friend of mine here (WI/MN border) is asking for recommendations for a 
next vehicle.  He's a fisherman, likes to go fishing and camping in the 
Boundary Waters with his two sons.  He says:   "I am looking for something 
with 4wd, smaller, so the gas is good, I want to be able to put my canoe on 
it (of course) and under $10,000."

I'm thinking maybe a used Subaru Legacy wagon.  Any other ideas?

What model years would we have to go back to to get in the $9-10K vicinity?
