Ian,

Despite the claim by many that Motorcraft T-stats are in some way better than
or superior to most aftermarket units out there, I personally believe that
most of the available T-stat offerings are on the same level when it comes to
quality. I also believe that on some cars (such as my Texas-residing Gen 2
ATX), a lower opening point can be very beneficial.

Thus, when it was time to replace the factory 1920 T-stat during my 3.3L
rebuild last summer, I decided bite the bullet and go with an aftermarket
(unbranded) 1800 T-stat from RCM Automotive (replete with built-in jiggle
valve). Upon visual inspection, I was unable to note any significant
differences between my old 1920 factory unit and the new 1800F aftermarket
unit that I had in my hand. Not only that, but when combined with a new 3.2L
radiator and some fresh coolant, I have experienced few problems keeping the
new 3.3L nice and cool, even with A/C cranked up in our hot Texas weather.
Needless to say, I have been quite happy with my $20 aftermarket T-stat
purchase from Russ.

As for your fan settings, I would recommend starting a few degrees cooler than
stock (say 206-2100 for your 'on' temp and, depending on the thermostat you
end up utilizing, at least 4-6 degrees above your T-stat opening temperature
for the 'off' setting).

Adam

Well, my (less than?) 2 year old Rev B Ford T-stat is
stuck shut. I want to replace it today. I have an
older spare Rev B kicking around at home that I could
use. However, if I can get a new unit locally (Pep
Boys, Autozone, Advance Auto, etc) I'd like to get
that. For the longest time, people swore on getting
Motorcraft only but I'd like to hear other
suggestions. Should I get a lower temp unit?

Speaking of which, I want to change when my fans kick
on and off. I was wondering if anyone had a good
suggestion for what settings to use (TwEECer).
