Are you sure the u-joint flanges fit properly into the mounting 
plates on the diff?  Note, the four bolts form a rectangle, but not a 
square, so they shouldn't fit properly if you turn them 90degrees.  
(In fact, the bolts shouldn't even go in, if I remember right.)
