Hi,
All this reminds me of that haunting olde tyme/bluegrass song about
the hurricane that hit Galveston.  I think the song might even be
called Galveston.
Tabby Thomas, father of Chris Thomas King (the black guitar player in
O, Brother), has/had a place in town where you could go hear real good
blues.  I'm not sure if it is still running, though.  If you are in
this area and it is still running, it is worth a visit.  Open mic
nights were very good.
