[Spridgets] Fuel tank restoration and fuel pick-up

OK so now I have a serviceable tank again. I boiled it on the BBQ twice for
about two hours each time. The first time up to the outlet hole, the second
with the outlet hole plugged with a wooden cork. The first time it was spic
and span on the lower half than did it full and got the rest out. It came
really clean. Oh yes I pried off the plastic filter pretty easily. The
second time I put the sending unit in and boiled it clean while I was a
BBQing.

The goo (varnish) came out with a good high power water rise from the garden
hose.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will just run external filters and not treat
the tank with any slosh or caustics.

It has a nice black paint job to boot.

I've done at least 4 tanks this way. Works great!

I've also used Castrol Superclean (the purple stuff) full strength to
remove varnish. I let it soak in the tank a few days, sloshing it
whenever I walked by. I used a garden hose to rinse the tank after
the soaking. The tank got amazingly clean. This was on a tank
that sat with 3 gallons of gas for about 15 years.

The last tank I cleaned I put in my electrolytic tank........ It
came out like new ;)

I never coat the inside with anything. Once they are clean inside -
they stay clean inside if you fill them with gas and drive the car ;)
