When you turn off the key the alternator is still connected to the battery
so the energy dumps there. With a kill switch the batt and alt are not
connected so the energy needs somewhere to dump. Turning the key only kills
the ignition circuit, it does not break the main power feed from battery to
solenoid to alternator.
