The spacer keeps you from overloading the bearings. Without the spacer, when
you tighten the axle nut, there is nothing to keep from pulling the bearings
together and wearing the inside of the races. - Jim

It's been my understanding that the spacer forms an integral part of the
stress design of the front hub.
Mechanical design indicates that the axle is supposed to be stronger with
the spacer.
