There is a really nicely written letter from the maker of Barrett
firearms to the state of Kalifornia. It seems as though the state
owned and used his products but they felt that the public should not
be entitled to own such things.

The Barrett sniper rifle and most of its off-spring are illegal in CA,
including new purchases for law enforcement. Agencies who had them
prior to the ban can keep and use them but can't buy more... Another
unique problem because of the law is that if an agency sends one to
the factory in TN, the factory cannot legally ship it back to CA. Some
CA agencies have them shipped to a law enforcement agency in NV and
send someone to pick them up!

American ingenuity is alive and well though... Barrett now makes a .49
caliber that is identical to the .50 except for the ammo size. CA
agencies can convert a 50 into a 49 for about $3K. More than one way
to skin a cat!
