Dave, 
Have fun changing from late dash to early dash.  It can be done but is
not easy.  The late dash mounts backwords of the early dash and the brackets
are in different place.  Colin Dodd - Sprite parts Australia has customer that
did this and detailed the whole change on Colin's website.  Might want to read
this before trying the change.

We need to do
a bunch of electrical work behind the dash. Since we don't have any
miniaturized hands available, we were thinking about some kind of hinged, or
easily removable dash panel. Has anyone ever tried anything like this?

Also,
can you swap dashboards between years? The car is a 1970 with the pillow
dashboard. (now more like rock that looks like a pillow) and I wouldn't mind
swapping in one of the earlier dashboards.
