As with any book source, you have to be aware that errors can creep into
the text. There are a few in Monroe's book and a few in the TBON; probably
due to passing on written information without double checking. I review my
information constantly to try an keep it correct but things happen and I
probably still have some fact wrong. I'm using Bob Mannel's book - Mustang
and Ford Small Block V8 as my main source of information.

About Jan 7, 1963 the 260 engine block was cast with 3 freeze plugs and the
7" mounting pattern - C3OE-6015B block; this made the 260 block similar to
the 289 block configuration.

The C3OE-B head has 1.39" exhaust valve and 1.59" intake valve

July 1963 - C4OE-6015B 260 engine block was cast. Note this date could be
wrong.
I don't have a clear introduction date for the C4OE-A heads with 1.67"
intake and 1.45" exhaust valves; similar to the standard 289 valves.
The C4OE-A heads continued to the end of the 260 build.

May 1964 - C4OE-6015E 260 engine block casting; this is the last casting
change for the 260 block

Tiger engine group T15KL = Aug 15, 1963 - this means that the C3OE-B and
C4OE-B engine blocks could have been used.
The C3OE-B heads are available and possibly the C4OE-A.

The big question here is what configuration did Ford put together for
that first group of 260 engines. Did Ford use left over parts or the new
castings. I don't know and we may never know. I don't think any of the
T15KL engines exist any more. They all seem to have been replaced with 289
engines.

Hello All:

Ron's information regarding the engines in the Tiger raises the question as
to the exact configuration of the engines in early Tigers, especially the
intake valve diameter. His comments got me interested and I dug out my copy
of Monroe's "How To Rebuild Your Small Block Ford". According to Monroe,
260 blocks with casting numbers C20E-F and C30E-B used intake valves with a
diameter of 1.59 inches. These were blocks made in '62 & '63, he says.
Later blocks, with casting # C40E-B, manufactured in '64, used 1.67 inch
valves. Ron raises the possibility that some of the early blocks may have
been used in Tigers. According to Monroe, the changeover to the C40 blocks
took place in February '63. Assuming the heads were changed at the same
time (probably a big assumption), the question then becomes, "when were the
Tiger engines purchased?" Does anyone have an answer? It seems that I
remember seeing the purchase dates for the different engine batches, but I
cannot remember where.

The other interesting piece of information from Monroe is that the early
blocks (presumably the C20 & C30 numbered) had two freeze plugs on each side
of the block as well as 6-inch engine mount hole spacing. Later blocks
(after Feb '63) had three freeze plugs and 7-inch spacing. If anyone has an
early Tiger (vinyl dash?), perhaps they could climb under and take a look at
the engine in their car and tell us how many freeze plugs it has.

None of this is probably definitive, but it might help sorting it all out.
Many thanks to Ron for all his efforts in collecting as much information as
he has.

Cheers,

Tod
