I think you hit it on the head with weight.  Air con, door braces, heated seats, stereo systems, stability control, infotainment, sound deadening, etc. PLUS the literal hundreds of pounds of wiring to support all that stuff kills economy.  And stupid ethanol in the US doesn't help a bit either!
