[TR] carb tuning

My opinion, the piston lift method is pretty worthless. Lift the piston
1/8" by hand on a running motor, and then there's the interpretation of the
what it does after thing. Lifetime of owning British cars and I know
opinions differ.
I have always fine tuned mostly by how the car drives, especially when
cold.
As the manuals say, start with the jets all the way snugged up, lower them
all 12 flats, see how it runs (may be a different starting setup depending
on the carbs you have but basically middle of the adjustment range). On
cool day started on the choke the car should need to stay on choke for a
short time, say 20 seconds to a minute, before it will take throttle inputs
without hesitating or bogging down.
Your idle should be nice and even, since you have multiple carbs you may
also want to read the plugs, there are multiple charts for that purpose.
My goal is to have a car that drives well, so the tuning method is
consistent with the goals.
If you want to get all scientific about it get a 02 sensor and a reader for
the exhaust.
