I went with a gear reduction starter to gain clearance at the frsme cross member. Put it has been way less reliable then the original starter. It is the least reliable part on my car by far. I have had to pull the solenoid apart and clean the contacts several times. I was finally able to find some replacement contacts for it. I hope that solves the problem and you have better results with your starter.

Just thought I would relate my experience with replacing the crash starter with something modern. First let me say this, the Chick Magnette is not a restored or pristine car, however, it is a reliable driver-barn find. Also I am not trying to keep the car original.

I finally got fed up with the crash starter. On cold start the starter would not make one revolution before it would disengage. That would make starting the car very cantankerous. I suspect the crash starter had ruined the ring gear teeth in several places causing the starter problem. I contacted T&S Imports and asked about their offering. They had one for a MGA that would fit the high mount location as long as I was willing to modify the flange on the new starter. The modification was to grind down about a 3 inch long strip where the standard flange would contact the cylinder block. Once done the Gaer reduction starter slipped right in. The performance of the starter is out standing, making cold starts a snap. And the new starter is not distroying the ring gear.

Like the Pertronix ignition and alternator conversions, I would definately do this starter conversion again.

In case anyone is wondering, I kept the old starter is the event that the next owner wants to finish grinding the teeth off of the ring gear with the crash starter.
