When I went to visit Lou this past August, I happened to be going thru her boxes in her shed and found those badges in a box.. She has a few left when I bought 2 of them.

So, I have 2. Both were sourced from Lou, and this being the case, involve a bit of a story and a <nod-nod><wink-wink>. It appears that "back in the day" the Z Magnette register decided that they needed to be able to offer some register grille badges through their new-fangled website (at the time a BBS). At that time, Lou was far more involved with the inner workings of the register, so ended up providing funding and the resources to get the original design done, moulds created and the castings plated. The original batch (I think 100?) had the inset bits of the design filled with the "Z" and the MGCC shield filled in a brown-y-orange color and the remainder filled in a cream enamel. This was accomplished in the finest of British cottage industry tradition by having Mabel down the lane hand fill the raw chromed castings.

As is common with volunteer organizations, the mechanics of taking orders, filling them and shipping them hither and yon to enthusiasts eventually fizzled to a stop after the first batch of painted badges was sold, a second batch was ordered but not enameled and only partially sold.

These have not been available on the Z register website or through the mother club for quite some time. I got my first one when I was just completing my car in 2006 and having mentioned that I was adorning Zeebee's snout with a golden 75th Jubilee MGCC badge, Lou slyly mentioned <nod-nod> <wink-wink> that she may be able to provide a not-enameld Z Reg badge on the sly if kept hush-hush. This is when she relayed this tale to me. When she and John came to stay in 2010, she plucked the painted original from her bag along with a multitude of goodies that she had lugged all the way here as trinkets for us Magnuts.

In my opinion, either of mine will change hands only upon my death because of the source and the history of them. I do believe that the non-enamelled badges, such as the one on FleaBay, are numerically more rare, but the fully enameled ones are harder to come by being as most of us who have one feel the same way I do about them.

Like most things, objects have a value proportional to your desire to own them. I feel the same about my Z Magnette Group North America badge. I am fortunate enough to have gotten in on the ground floor, so to speak, and had the foresight to get additional for Ian, the mysterious "White Car" and one forAndrea's car, should the beast ever see the light of day again. In all other instances, I would be willing to pay through the nose to acquire this symbol of solidarity with this group.

I am quite sure that either Gunther or Lou would let us know if ever there was another batch commissioned and there was a new supply of these - enameled or not.

tis my understanding, those are a pretty rare bit, unless maybe they've starting making them again? Properly painted the MG factory colors, those are really, really cool. And, as our Fearless Leader would say, "I have no financial interest in this", but this one appears not to be pitted, and does not appear to need replating.

This is the second time, that I know of, that this has been on eBay UK. There were no bids the first time around.
