You're right, Mike, they are steel and Knox did mine. I'm thinking of the fog lamp brackets.

I too had the chrome on my Varitone redone. While I remember the door handles, hood hinges, backup/license lamp cover, and some of the interior pieces being pot metal, the bumper guards on my car seemed like real steel. Wouldn't they have to be, since the mounting plate is welded to the formed guard?

The shop I used for the Magnette is no longer in business, but the shop that did my MGA is still open: Sherm's Custom Plating, in Sacramento. They redid the MGA's bumpers and windshield frame about 15 years ago, and they still look great.

I had every piece of chrome on my car done and it was a bit over $5000! That was about 10 years ago. So chrome isn’t cheap anymore. I thought I got a reasonable deal especially when you look at what they have to do with the grille and backup light/trunk lock bits. Bumpers/overriders, accent trim, all that was easy compared to the first 2 items. My body guy sent some bits off to “his” shop and they came back kind or orangey/yellow and looked like someone had run a comb through them. I then took this and the rest to “my” chrome shop which is also sometimes used by Legendary Motorcars and RM Classics when they want to stay within the province. Both of those shops recommended this shop to me. That would be Cambridge Custom Chrome in Cambridge, Ontario.

I had my bumpers done by Jim at Knox, they came out nicely and cost around $900. Now that does not include the overriders, which Knox will not do, since they are pot metal. He hands you off to "Round Man" who does pot metal. I need to send mine up there and get the chrome finished.

I also need to send the Varitone trim to him for re-chrome, but I'm scared to see how much that will cost.

Is $950 cheaper than rechrome? Maybe I'm underestimating the surface area of
Magnette bumpers. Some people on MG experience recommended Knox Custom Chrome,
which puts MGB bumpers at $225 per this price list: http://www.knoxcustomchrome.com/wp-content/uploads/Price-Catalog-20141.pdf

My Farina has a three piece rear bumper. Thinking I'd send in one chunk and see
how they do...
