[Zmagnette] First Gear Clankety Clank (Fletcher Millmore)

Thanks Fletcher.

So I drained the transmission oil and, lo and behold, nothing shiny. Perhaps
I detected a few miniscule specks of metal, but nothing really noticeable.
Is there another way I can test to see if the gearbox is toast? Thanks and
peace out.

OK folks,

I just got done replacing the water pump and thermostat, so I am flushing
the cooling system. I do not want to drive the girl around for any length of
time, of course, but I did want to get it moving to get the fluids going, if
you will. After finally getting the car started, I drove it around the block
a few times. First gear specifically is giving an obvious "clankety clank"
sound which goes away when I get into 2nd gear. Any thoughts? Oil seems ok,
I am a bit low on transmission oil, and beyond that I am perplexed.

Best and peace out,

Jon M.

Unfortunately for you, that is the characteristic of a dead gearbox.
Standard "gearbox kit" was 1st gear, laygear, layshaft, bearings, 2nd
synchro ring, and gaskets.
All 3 synch MG/Mag/A/B needed these all the time. I did hundreds of them.
(same for the smaller A series Morris/spridget/mini ones) If you drain the
oil you will likely find a lot of shiny, hard metal - that was the teeth off
1st and the laygear. If all the pieces are small, you might get away with
driving it gently when in 1st/rev for quite a while, but if you find large
pieces of teeth, death is imminent.

Well guys, thank goodness this fellow thinks as he does towards his passion
towards cars. Think, he?s a rare chap able to purchase vehicles people can
see. Rather than them disappearing into the world of rust and non-repair.
It?s a person we should thanks' around; otherwise most of these models would
be gone. That he wishes the sum he?s asking isn?t out of line. Someone
wealthy [I wish it were I] will come along and pay up. Now whether or not
the collection will stay as one; as opposed to being split up in sale
following the sale, is a question.
But thanks God for blokes like this is all I can say, regardless as to how
he made his lolly. Certainly he?s a clever business man: something some
people like. Others that don?t.
But hey....the cars are alive!!!
Cheers
Mike ? Calgary
Ex-pat.

I'm in. do you take box tops for education? Each box top is worth 10 cents
to the school. I have a lot saved for the next school year but could be put
towards these nice cars.
