The fluted cup or end-cap style oil filter wrench is almost 100% effective.
There are three or four sizes to fit all filters. You can use a 3/8" drive
ratchet and extension to remove the filter.

There is one premium brand (maybe more than one) that has a nut on the 
bottom for getting the wrench to it..probably about a 1" nut size..look for 
it.
