My original post was a bit misleading. I HAVE an early (Series II)
engine with a spin on type adaptor installed. What I was wondering
was if there could have been some known "gotch ya" with that
conversion which could ofoffered me some hope to avaoided the inevitable.
With my stock gauge I read 0 PSI at idle, I found this somewhat
hard to believe so I fitted a cheap aftermarket gauge to "test"
the stock gauge. The new gauge reads 10 to 15 PSI at hot idle.
I will have a look at the oiling pipe for the valve gear.
I do have a loud rod type sound that has been getting worse
over the 1K miles I have driven the car (familiar sound, very sure of
source).
I "tested" the oil pressure relief with a small deep socket, a
bathroom scale, a set of calipers and a calculator. I get a relief
pressure of about 70lbs which, given my test methodology, is pretty
close to spec.
The 1725 pump, which you can (could) get from Rick, will fit
the earlier engines but you have to modify the pump in some minor way
(which I can't remember), I did that on a Series I motor I rebuilt.
A new unmodified 1725 pump came with the Series II car so If I find
any wear on the pump I will use it.
What more should I know about the pressure relief valve? Is there
a known problem with them?
