Yes, the transmission tunnel was enlarged to accomodate the the automatic.
 As such, these cars are desirous for alternate engine swaps, especially with
automatics. I know a guy who put a 2.6 liter Capri V6 engine with its'
automatic (C-4 ?) in a series IV automatic with little alteration.

If you would like, I can put you in contact with him. I believe he did some
investigation concerning engine compartment and transmission tunnel sizes and
possible engine/tranny combinations that would fit in the Alpine.
