Chris McGovern's book holds a prominent place on my mantle in the
living room, and it is a great discussion piece - nearly everyone who
comes into my home heads right for his book and wants to know all
about its contents.
It is one of my favorite books.
I have one suggestion for the new edition. I'd like to see lots of
(preferably color) photographs of stock Alpines from each model year,
with clear pictures of the instrument panel, engine, interior and
body. There are such a large number of "modified" Alpines around
these days, it would be nice to have some reference for what an
original condition one is really supposed to look like!
I'd also like to see pictures of some of the interesting mods. How
about a picture of the "Alpo" - Oopps - I mean Pinto-pine?
By the way, I found Mr. McGovern's suggestions re: performance tuning
a HUGE help this week. I couldn't start the car for several days,
narrowed down the problem to faulty spark plugs. Well, I had just
replaced my plugs a few hundred miles ago, but sure enough, they
weren't sparking, due to oil fouling. Well, this made me think that
maybe the plug I was using didn't have a high enough heat range to
burn off whatever oil was creeping into the cylinder chamber. I
switched to Champion N9Ys (as recommended in the performance tuning
section of the book) and the car is running better than it ever ever
ever has! Now the sun is out, the hood is down, and I am on top of
the world.
There is nothing that compares to the feeling of driving a good
running Alpine with the top down on the first sunny day of the
season.
