Possible guesses:

1) Rootes figured the soon-to-be-introduced 5-main bearing 1725cc was up to
the extra RPM's.
2) Rootes wanted to match the competition's acceleration (eg. MGB)
regardless of the fact that Americans by then were frequently driving on
brand-new 70+ mph freeways.
3) Rootes had 10,000+ leftover 4.22 differentials lying around that they
weren't planning to put in any of the sedans: PRESTO ! Give 'em to the Yanks!
