Battery Problems.

Hi.

I have a question relating to the battery on my 1962 Alpine S2 that I
hope someone out that may be able to help me with.

Not having had a car before with an AMP gauge before, what should I
expect this to read. At idle the needle sits a couple of millimetres
below zero, this rising to a couple of millimetres above zero on the
move. Tapping the gauge (the fix for the petrol gauge :-) ) has no
effect.

I ask this because of a problem I encountered yesterday on a 120 mile
round trip. Previously and since the problem I have had no
starting/electrical problems (petrol gauge apart) but at the half way
point I tried to start the car and got the typical flat battery
response - groaning noise from starter. This happened a second time but
the third time the car started as normal. Whilst I am quite happy for
problems to go away I am worried that this could be something worth
fixing now before I get stuck somewhere with a dead battery (the
battery is only a few years old and I believe in fairly good condition.
A full service a few weeks ago topped it up).

Any ideas? - Thanks in advance for any replies.
