Sounds as if your ammeter is working correctly. My Series V (with alternator
of course) ammeter works comparably, although just after startup the guage
reads about +15 amps for a minute. The fact that the starter responded in
different fashions (actually getting better later on) after similar driving
and guage readings makes me think the starter could be your problem, or
perhaps a loose connection to or from it.
