My S5 Alpine has a Carbon disc throwout bearing, which was worn out when
I got the car.  Ultimately would not disengage clutch, and the hydraulics
had adjusted the travel until the bearing hit the trans input shaft at 
overtravel!
This failure would be a "closer to the floor" type.
If your disk or pressure plate are the worn items, you would expect a
"closer to the top" engagement.
But what do I know, the engine blew 200 miles later, and I still haven't
got it back together!  We are talking 1978.
