I've been wanting to change over to an o/d transmission in my series
V. The recent posting about 5-speed Toyota trannies, and the
relative difficulty of finding a factory o/d has made wonder what it
would be like to install a tranny from (shudder) another
manufacturer's car.
Here I display my ignorance: if another tranny is geared just the
same as my stock tranny (for gears 1-4 anyway) will the acceleration
curves be the same? Will it "feel" the same? What I don't know is
whether the gear ratio and the size of the top gear are the only
factors that contribute to how a transmission "feels". I love the
feel of my transmission just as it is - the way it accelerates, the
points at which it wants to shift up and down - and I would hate to
lose this. I only want to add something on the top end so the car
isn't winding so hard on the freeway.
And if I do try to mount another car's transmission, what other cars
are possibilities? I have a Volvo (1982 w/ 5-speed overdrive) and I
love the transmission in it - how do I figure out if a Volvo
transmission would fit?
What do you all think?
Thanks in advance.
