Cheap Engine Stands

Since my looong time friend Gary Windblad had the gall to let someone
else borrow his engine stand after I offer to provide him FREE LONG TIME
STORAGE for it, it looks like I'm in the market for one.

Kragens (the el cheapo auto parts chain) sells them for under 35 bucks
so I'm kinda tempted. This is the Tee platform 3-wheel type, but the
one I looked at seemed sturdy enough. In fact, Kragens usually has a
small block V8 mounted on one in their stores as a display to promote
their rebuilt engine sales. I've been told this type can be unstable,
but I was thinking I might be able to make a simple mod or two to
alleviate this problem. Has anyone on this list bought one of these
cheapie stands and used it? I so, how did it work out?

I'm not inclined to spend big bucks on a stand since I don't plan to
make engine rebuilding my career. I'd prefer not having much tied up in
something I'll no doubt want to get rid of once the job is done.
