I have never actually seen a rusty boot lid. Can you see bubbles on the inside
? Could it be a reaction of the paint to the primer underneath ?

With a car built in '63 condition rather than mileage is the thing to look at.
If the odometer hadn't read 0 it might have said say 10000, is that 101,000 or
201,000

Have you looked closely at the underneath of the car ?
Have you tried the trick of jacking up the car with its own jack and then
seeing whether you can still open the doors ?
