The recess of the wheel is certainly part of what bothers me. Maybe it
is the greatest part of it. Last night, while looking for examples, I
noticed how anything but a broadside view really caused the rear wheel
opening to appear non-concentric with the wheel. I suspect another part
has to do with the problem of allowing for the load in a light car. The
greater the load as a percentage of total vehicle weight, the more the
springs are extended when the car is empty. If you try to fit the fender
close to the wheel when the car is loaded, it will appear a bit odd when
it is empty.
