Having sat in the club newletter editor chair, I've wondered the same
thing myself and have gone on the advice of others that share this view.
The general concenus being it's ok to use in local club newletters as
long as the original source was credited.

I think most editors would agree with this and like you mentioned, most
will be flattered that you thought highly enough of the original
publication that they'd like to use it in their newletter. The only time
I can think of when this gets into trouble is in the case of either a
copyrighted article that was published but improper credits given or
copyright mark left off and secondary publishers are not aware.

The same question also applies to internet responses and whether the
general concensus being if it's ok to publish those in local club
newsletters.
