I (vaguely) remember from auto shop that your car will run with the coil connected either way, but you lose much of the coils spark potential if it is connected backwards. This might only be detected under heavy load conditions (i.e. a high-speed miss). This condition is obvious when using a scope, as the spark pattern is upside down on the screen... ............................................................
