Fortunately, the coild really doesn't car which way the current flows, as long as the ground connection is the one that gets interupted (opening of the points), and even this can be screwed up, and it will still fire. HOWEVER....They work Best when connected correctly !!! Had that been a smart coil (with microprocessors for timing controll, etc), it would have been a dead coild once you turned the key on! Electronics, do NOT like reversed power !! POOF !!

You were lucky it was only the coil on a very old car !!
