A real simple check to see if there is water in the oil. When the engine is cold, open up the valve cover breather cap, and check the bottom of the cap. If there is some light brownish frothy foam, then you more than likely have a water leak into the block, and probably from the head gasket. My old 65 did that until I changed the head gasket, and had the head milled after I rebuilt it. If the cap is clean with just oil on it, then you don't have a water leak into the block!
