I used to own an Alpine which had the same problem ...

brake hard ... "clunk, clunk" ....

brake very hard ... "clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk!"

Examined the splided hubs - the teeth were worn. After much thought (and realising how hard it was to keep wire wheels clean - especially when the rear hub bearing seals are leaking oil) I decided to swap them for 'normal' ones (and fixed the oil leaks too). A pair of Alloy WolfRace slotted wheels actually looked rather good.

The two hard parts here were a) removing the front brake calipers as the bolts are VERY tight and b) removing the rear hubs from the half-shafts; even tighter - I had to employ expert help in both these areas.

A friend did (unadvisedly in my opinion) buy my worn wire hubs and wheels and, if I remember correctly, got a machine shop to grind them down and insert/cover with new sleeves of metal which were then 're-splined', all at great expense.

When I brake I get a clunk from the rear end.

This turns out to be worn splines and worn wire wheel hubs.

Together there is enough play to...clunk.

Is there something one can do to tighten the fit before they need replacing?

Grease, gasket goop etc...?
