When I brake I get a clunk from the rear end.
This turns out to be worn splines and worn wire wheel hubs.
Together there is enough play to...clunk.
Is there something one can do to tighten the fit before they need replacing?
Grease, gasket goop etc...?
dgb ***** NOTES from Jay Laifman (JLAIFMAN (at) PNM) at 6/20/96 7:20a Yes, exactly. You are *supposed* to lubricate the threads and mating surfaces of the hub and wheel. In fact, the Owner's Manual states on page 20 "All dirt and rust must be removed, and the mating faces greased before the wheel is fitted. This stops the metal to metal from binding up and not tightening enough. I had the same noise with brand new wheels and very good condition hubs. It went away as soon as I learned of and applied the lubrication.
